A legacy programme presented by the University of Pretoria (UP) in collaboration with Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP) was recently awarded the Best Work Readiness Initiative at the 2021 South African Graduate Employers Association (SAGEA) Awards.

This one-of-a-kind programme, known as the Ready for Work Programme, was launched in 2017 with the goal of assisting young adults, students, and recent graduates who are entering the workforce to integrate more easily into the workplace and build life skills. As the world of work in the 21st century necessitates a multi-skilled and self-sufficient labour force, academic qualifications are no longer sufficient to guarantee employment, as employers seek work-ready graduates with job-specific skills.

The exclusive packaged offering assists students to transition from the world of education to the world of work by providing them with essential workplace and other life skills that will not only improve their career goals, but also open doors to prospective employment. This would include not only skills and knowledge that enhance their professional and personal profiles, but also assisting them in making a meaningful contribution to the workforce, their communities, and the economy while striving for further success in their chosen careers.

Since 2017, more than 13,919 UP students and corporate nominees have enrolled in the Programme, which can also be customised to meet the needs of individual organisations.

The programme has four online packages that cover Career PlanningPower SkillsJob Preparation, and Your Career.

  • The Career Planning package is designed to help delegates plan a successful career and improve their job satisfaction. This package will assist them in choosing a career, developing a career plan, selecting potential employers who will best suit their overall career goals, participating in activities to enhance their CV, and learning the fundamentals of entering the workplace.
  • The Power Skills package includes modules that will assist them in navigating the workplace, contributing to their success, and presenting the best version of themselves to their employer. These power skills include, but are not limited to, assertiveness, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, stress management, and problem-solving. These skills apply to anyone in the workplace.
  • Delegates are given information to help them look for job opportunities as part of the Job Preparation package, emphasizing the importance of digital profiling and emphasizing the skills they need when looking for job opportunities.
  • The Your Career package is designed to introduce delegates to a set of long-term perspectives that are critical in an age of rapid technological change. They will learn a set of “soft” skills that will help them succeed in their careers.
